Carnival Adds Another Cruise Ship, NCL Guests Mad Over Fine Print

Cruise news today. Carnival detailed plans on Thursday to expand its presence in Galveston by introducing its fourth ship to the Gulf Coast. Passengers sailing on Norwegian Cruise Line ships out of Spain are learning how important it is to read the fine print on things like the company's famous “Free At Sea” promotion. But that promotion, which includes drinks and certain meals in specialty restaurants, comes at a per day, per person cost when sailing out of Spain. This is detailed clearly in the promotional materials, saying the tax will be charged “for certain sailings departing from Spain or any European itinerary while in Spanish waters.” The Spirit-class ship will debut in Galveston in the fall of 2025. Cruise Port Tells Ships to Slow Down, Carnival Cruise Axes Venue

Cruise news today. After a record-breaking summer that saw 560,000 cruise passengers visit Sitka, Alaska, a local resident is leading an initiative to cap annual cruise visitors at 240,000. Inspired by a similar measure in Bar Harbor, Maine, the proposal also includes daily and weekly limits and would require cruise companies to secure permits. Brand ambassador John Heald confirmed that new ship builds will no longer include libraries. According to Heald, the decision was made to make room for more bars and restaurants, as the number of people interested in borrowing books or visiting the library during their cruise has been decreasing. Carnival Makes Changes at Half Moon Cay

Cruise news today. Carnival Cruise Line has notified guests planning to rent a cabana on their private island, Half Moon Cay, that air conditioning units in the structures will be replaced with fans. In a letter to guests, Carnival stated that the change is being made because it is both energy-inefficient and ineffective to air condition the open-air structures. A small cabana on Half Moon Cay is still listed at $699 for the day, while the larger, two-story structures are priced at $999. Two New York City councilmembers are introducing a bill to reduce emissions from cruise ships docked at the city's ports. The legislation would mandate that cruise ships use shore power rather than running their engines and burning fuels while docked at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook and Manhattan Cruise Terminal. Industry website Cruise Fever recently conducted a survey on social media asking cruisers what their favorite onboard dining venue was. The website then ranked them according by responses. The new destination will provide an atmosphere for adults seeking relaxation away from family activities. Features include over an acre of white sand beach, in-water hammocks, a live DJ by the pool, and two levels of cabanas—some with their own plunge pools. Dining options range from tropical pizzas to burgers, and multiple bars will serve craft cocktails. The area will be accessible on sailings from various U.S. ports, with the costs varying by the season at $39-89 per person. The cruise ship Ocean Explorer, carrying 206 passengers and crew, was successfully freed after running aground off Greenland's eastern coastline earlier this week. Despite initial failed attempts to refloat the ship and concerns about waiting for a larger Danish naval vessel for assistance, the ship was eventually dislodged by a Greenlandic fishing research vessel. Cruise Ship Stuck in Mud, Failed Recovery Attempt

Cruise news today. An attempt to free the grounded Ocean Explorer cruise ship by a large fish trawler during high tide on Wednesday was unsuccessful. Armed forces personnel who have inspected the ship in remote Northeast Greenland report that everyone on board is in good condition. The Danish Navy's patrol vessel is expected to reach the site tomorrow afternoon to try and free the vessel. With Marseille hotels fully booked during the Rugby World Cup, organizers have turned to a creative solution to address the hotel room shortage. Norwegian Epic has been transformed into a floating hotel to cater to rugby fans. Recognizing the limited lodging options in Marseille, this initiative was born from the observation that the city could only offer 10,000 accommodations for an event that attracts 80,000 Rugby fans. Carnival plans to extend its Family Fued game show experience to a dozen ships by the fall of next year. The next in line for the addition are Carnival Vista, which will debut the game on its September 16 cruise, followed by Carnival Legend, Carnival Pride, Carnival Miracle, and Carnival Jubilee in 2023, and a slew of other ships throughout 2024. Cruise Ship Runs Aground, Help Arrives Friday

Cruise news today. On Monday, the cruise ship Ocean Explorer ran aground off the coast of Northeast Greenland with 206 passengers and crew on board, and there are no reports of injuries or damage to the local area. The Arctic Command's closest unit is an offshore patrol vessel named Knud Rass-mew-sin, which is approximately 1,200 nautical miles away and is expected to arrive at the grounded ship on Friday morning, weather dependant. The Arctic Command is working with other partners to investigate whether other units can have a shorter and faster route to the grounded ship. Carnival Ship Gets Permission to Sail Cruise to Nowhere

Cruise news today. Due to delays caused by Hurricane Idalia, the Port of Tampa was closed until late Thursday, affecting fuel tankers and cruise ships, including Carnival Paradise and Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas. With the port prioritizing fuel shipments, Serenade of the Seas and Carnival Paradise didn’t return to Tampa until early this morning. Carnival Paradise will now sail a modified three-night "cruise to nowhere" with no port stops. While the Passenger Vessel Services Act generally mandates port stops for cruise ships, exceptions can be made for inclement weather, allowing ships to sail without stopping at a foreign port. The Celebrity Beyond assisted the Italian Coast Guard in a search and rescue operation late last week. The ship received a call from the Italian Coast Guard asking them to approach to create a wind and sea shelter for over 200 people on a fishing boat without life jackets. After pausing its weekly calls to Maui due to wildfires in Lāhainā, Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America will resume its operations this weekend. The cruise line had temporarily adjusted its itineraries earlier this month to alleviate stress on local resources. During its time away, the line contributed $50,000 to Maui United Way and collected over $150,000 in essential supplies for the community. Cruise line stock prices for CCL, RCL, and NCLH.
